What Causes Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts are a problem that many women have to deal with at some point in their reproductive lives. For some women, it's just one cyst, and then they are never bothered by the problem again. For others, it is a recurring problem that causes them great pain every month and can even cause infertility. Cysts can also unbalance your hormones and cause all kinds of other problems if you don't deal with them. But what causes ovarian cysts in the first place?

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that attach themselves to the ovaries. They form when there is excessive fluid around the ovaries during the time of menstruation. Lots of women get temporary cysts and don't even know it. They just think that their period is particularly painful that month. Those cysts are temporary and will go away on their own. When an excessive amount of fluid forms around an egg in the ovary, then a functioning cyst is formed. This is not dangerous, but can still be uncomfortable.

Of course, there are other degrees of cysts. If a LOT of fluid is present and surrounds the egg, then a follicular cyst develops. This causes the ovary itself to swell up and change color, while growing to 3 or more inches in diameter. This will also typically shrink in a few months, but you'll suffer with some pain during and even between your periods in the meantime.

Finally, there is the curpus lutern cyst, which forms when the ovary actually tears open to get rid of the egg. As the ovary heals itself, sometimes fluid is produced which forms one or more cysts. They can resolve themselves in a few weeks in some cases, but may also be more persistent and require greater measures to get rid of. Other types of ovarian cysts are caused by excess bleeding of the endometrial tissue. This can cause blood to leak into the area surrounding the egg and fill up a sac with blood, which can then rupture and cause incredible pelvic pain. You can get one cyst at a time, or several, which is called polycystic ovarian syndrome, and may require medical intervention to cure.
